Looks like some of the voters have realized that,
1) Sinhalese are the Majority group in Ceylon but a Minority group in the Globe.
2) Tamils or Dravidians are the minority group in Ceylon and a Majority group in the Globe.
Hence solidarity is involuntary to stop extinction of Sinhalese!

The election results have confirmed that
1. Rescuing Tamil civilians from the clutches of the LTTE is a good thing.
2. Sri Lankans can solve problems themselves.
3. Tamil war-mongers can find another place to waste their money on.

An expected result.
MR should keep guard and also be ready to declare emergency if needed, to activate special
powers in handling NE, if suicide b0mbings continue, and if l.t.t.e does not lay down arms and talk.

The opposition parties have lost the pulse of the people.
The two main opposition parties have lost the heart beat of the people and therefore should blame none but themselves. The UNP voter base dropped to 27% in Matale and Kurunegala all time low in the history of the party. SB who challenged the President to win against him had been given the verdict by the people of his own home town, which he could not win.
JVP poled mere 1% - 2% in all the districts. JVP had 8 members last time and this time none. There breakaway group NFF which support the government got one member elected to central province. Wayaba results yet to be announced.
The job in hand eradicating the LTTE terrorism is the utmost important and the number one priority in the list. The MR government was bold to test the central province a predominantly a UNP strong hold. The people wants to get this done, rest is secondary though may be important. That’s the final verdict of the people of these two provinces.
Sooner the opposition realizes this it is better, if not they will go reeling down the hill in the coming Provincial council elections.

To me the good thing about these 'meaningless' elections is that the JVP is biting the dust again while their counterparts in the North are being dealt militarily. Two sides of the same coin pumping oxygen to each other! The fate of the JHU will not be far away.
Wow! What a mouth salivating outcome!

what a surprise! everyone was expecting the UNP to win!
Time was when we cuddled together in Kandy as small kids and cheered everytime the JVP polled more votes than the rejected votes.
Good job by MR at the elections. Hope he can wrap up this war and move onto developing the country.

JVP has done the job and fading.
When the time was difficult, they pulled the urban patriotism up and kept it together and the MR/GR combination took it to the next level.
If JVP had the brains and the vision, the would have survived bit longer.
I also noticed Romeo's different attitude.

The election result shows that parties have to adapt..
.. we may even see emergence of new political parties.
There is a visible change in the environment.

Frankly, yes it is a change of attitude. I never for a moment believed that MR wanted to finish the war. I thought that like chandrika it would be a beggar's wound, to be fed on, with all its corruption and beeshanaya. Now what I see, specially from the forces, makes me change my mind slowly. I have started thinking MR might after all be sincere in his attempt to wipe out the LTTE.
What SL needs is a benevolent dictator who has the strength to resist corruption. If the war is won, and if MR is that BD, it will augur well for SL.
Dhammika:
Our Kandyan upbringing was very strict and proper. Gosh how we feared adults back then. I sort of envy the freedom kids enjoy now. I see kids as young as 8 sporting mobile phones. BTW I think that's a good thing too.

Welcome to the DUMB future generation.
They will have fried brain due to EM interference.
The freedom kids are enjoying now will backfire on them. The will be less productive than their parents.
You see that in US younger generation.
If you believe you had a strict and proper upbringing, you were brought up in a proper structure and you should thank your parents/heritage for that.
That has to continue to build a strong nation.
Good to hear that you were open minded hence change of hearts.
I wanted MR/GR to become benevolent dictators, after listening to them on youtube, I am bit skeptical about that. I question their vision beyond millitary.

So you remember it too. And the unending sinhala/hindhi and god knows what movies all of which we watch in parallel because different channels release different results... oh yes... and the unlimited coffee... how can one live through a cold Kandy night without coffee... gosh I miss home.
