When we said a millitary solution is the only and it is possible, lot of people said that it will never happen.

People like Negombo and KKK have vanished from the earth.

Today, there were stories that over 300 fighters have surrendered and leaders are in negotiations.

The big dance is coming to and end.

I cannot talk to KKK or Negombo but I believe this will not resolve the issue. The problem will be there for longer than you think. Tell me if GOSL has or will have the means to keep up the military power like this for long term ?  Both supporters and the non supporters of ltte, sure it is a surprise on the developments there.

mm... thaya/daya irendairam naalu saar,  what do you mean about means to keep up military p0wer.. aren't you tired enough of the wAr..
the concern should be if GOSL is able to bring together all the provinces and make good the gains.. all groups have to get together and
shape up the country. Still, to answer your question, SL should easily be able to keep up the militAry p0wer.

Keeping up with the military power is one of the long term goals of GOSL.  Not only that I think majority of the military will be stationed in Northern and Eastern provinces.  But on the other hand, presence of military should not be viewed as a threat to people of North and East and they should work to gain the confidence of the people.  I stronlgy believe at the end of the war, Tamil civilians will have a different out look on the military than they had before.

paramilitary security forces ( secondary and police forces ) should be used once the militAry goals are met with.

the militAry may not leave so soon, esp from north - agree with D on that.

Post Unqualified SL Academic!
The ABC has picked someone not qualified to speak on the matter!  Dr. Jayasuriya is an Economist. http://ideas.repec.org/e/pja176.html  He has no clue about this conflict, other than being from Sri Lanka.

One simple issue the good economist did not say much about: how did the SLA beat the LTTE? Why the LTTE keeping running? What makes him think that best LTTE cadre are still unused. The video reminded me of initial arguments where with poor old Taraki. Taraki, reading Athas's bible, as was so convinced about the poor quality of the SLA. He was wrong, just as Dr. Jayasuriya is wrong. Neither have a clue about military tactics or war, and should stick to what they know about: ancient history and economics respectively.

The key to understand is this: the LTTE lost ground to the Special Forces. It was small units that destroyed the LTTE allowing the regular units to move and hold lines. The LTTE ran way when the Special Forces come, and now they have no place to go to.

The LTTE can only go on in an urban setting, hiding among civilians, and that takes little knowledge to understand. In the jungle the SLA LRRP/Special Forces rule and the LTTE will be on the run and be hunted down one by one, and that is why is prefers its human shield. The GOSL will rely on infiltration, intelligence and international cooperation to whittle down the urban LTTE over the next decade or two.

Too many have no idea just how good these SLA soldiers are. If you did, none of you would be worrying too much about the LTTE as an effective guerrilla outfit. The only way the LTTE can come back with any effectiveness in the rural areas is if the SLA disbands the Special Forces or compromises its leadership--which is possible given just how much the GOSL is unlike the Israeli government.

The good economist mentions Israel, but forgot to mention that Sri Lanka's opposition constantly spoke of civilians deaths, economic weakness, etc. What Israeli opposition party did that (barring the far left)?

P.O.
