Sri Lanka Says Tamil Tiger Air Unit Is Threat to India, Regi
bloomberg, Mon Mar 26 21:02:18 EDT 2007
March 27 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka's government said a bombing raid by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on an air force base near Colombo is evidence the rebels have an air unit that poses a threat to the country and neighboring India.
``The LTTE is the only terrorist group in the world to have air capability,'' Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, the minister for trade, commerce and highways, said at a news conference yesterday in Colombo, according to the Ministry of Defense Web site. India and other countries should be aware of the threat.

Re: Sri Lanka Says Tamil Tiger Air Unit Is Threat to India,
Why did MR impose an information blackout? What is there to hide. Only two helicopters were slightly damaged. No need for a blackout.

Hah, haaa! Joke of the day. Indian airforce use different criteria for promotions! They never put visualy impaired people in front of radar screens, just because they come from well to do families.

Is this the credit statement or an award for achievement??

two light gliders become threat (also )to India NOW !! Pathetic!!
Is that means not a threat to SriLanka any more ???
Or LTTE have more air wing that capable of hitting far as India, which SLAF still can't identify from their eagle eyes ?
What is happing to those UAV’s up in the Vanni sky ?
Or it is the cry for those 3 di radar on offer ?.
One thing is clear, no matter what hi-fi you install and monitor; it is the people behind the devices should be smart.
If LTTE can pick an ordinary Sunday night for a casual attack (where half of those on duty hanging around gala party near by) then any attack on any sophisticated task is imminent. It is also a fact that 365 days vigilant can be spoiled by one Sunday eve.
SLAF commander should be responsible for the miserable agony that MR and his team in today and not any one else!!!

We are getting tired of Govt. rhetoric AFTER THe FACT. THey are great at issuing statements after an attack. Why didnt they have search lights and why dont they have a capability to scramble defenses? Or even have Ack-Ack fire? This is a huge propaganda victory for the LTTE and even though I wish them destroyed, reality is reality. The Token Kandyan Keheliya utters kehelmal. When will two Single Engined airplanes be a threat to the IAF? IAF is not SLAF? This is the second attack on SLAF terroritory in 5 years and they were caught napping again. How will they explain this ? Two Aircraft NEED a Runway, to fly out of and land at night with lights or at least radar to guide them. They had photos of what they flew with improvised local munitions racks and free-fall aka Gravity bombs with fins. Govt. spends 23 millon US dollars and they do it with local technology without kickbacks. Lets give credit where it is due and NEVER underestimate the enemy. I said it many times. The brilliant guys should be hired into the SLAF for their ingenuity. Kehelia's kehel mal will not bring India to the rescue. What a farce.

Pulle should really stop embarrassing himself and the government. No one is going to buy these nonsense of 'threat to India' seriously unless he makes a good connection between the two. All he is doing now is making himself and the govt look desperate. These old style .'s really make things worse.

You should learn to calm down a bit. There was no Kfir or Migs flying because they are being inspected before putting them back in action. Did you think 40% were out of action because TN said so? man! when are you going to learn?

Who can say that the LTTE air section is not a threat to India... LTTE have attacked India before and lied about it for 15 years, so who's to say that they won't do it agian, or that anyone can trust the word of the LTTE...

only those who drink milk from a feeding-bottle would believe that ltte's planes are threat to india. grow up.
sl should listen to india if india listen to lanka. many of you forgot why indira gandhi trained tamils. because, sl played games with india at that time. but, when india put sl in a cage, ltte jumped out in the jungle. sl is doing the same game again.

I checked tamilnet to see the LTTE's side of the story since there is a blackout on the air attack. One article says four MIG bombers carried an air raid on monday Tamilnet Monday, Mon, 26 Mar 2007, 13:23 GMT wrote:Four Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Russian made MIG bombers Monday noon attacked Vellankulam, located north of Iluppaikkadavai in Mannar district and Pokkanai in Puthukudiyiruppu in Mullaithivu district in
The other article says only 2 propeller driven air crafts and a seaplane took off from Katunayake all day monday. Tamilnet Mon, 26 Mar 2007, 22:24 GMT wrote:Meanwhile, only two propeller-driven Pucara ground attack aircraft and a seaplane took off from Katunayake all day Monday.
I'm confused as to where the four MIG planes (which the first article mentions) had taken off from?
Foot note
Just for the record. I'm sure no body would read this. Anyways, the tamilnet has removed the first article from their web site (on or before Wed, 28 Mar 2007), to give more credibility to the second article

Abby, India is looking at the bigger picture. LTTE is winning now. If you read tamilnet you'll learn that 40% of the air power is gone already. At this rate another few years and ealam is yours.
Now that's when the problems starts for India. Tamil nadu is inspired by LTTE's success of creating a sepeate country. They too begin to break up and starts a separatist war. Who comes to their help? The elite LTTE air force of course. And by that time the LTTE air force would be far more advanced than the two light air craft unit which they have now. The LTTE sea tigers and land tigers too would be a huge force by then. So India has two options. Combat LTTE when they are at this stage, or wait longer let them grow and combat later and have a gala war.
