 Defeat: Dhoni's home attacked
24.com, Sun Mar 18 13:33:31 EDT 2007
Ranchi, India - Furious Indian cricket fans stormed the home of national wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Sunday to protest a five-wicket rout by Bangladesh in their opening World Cup match, police said.
Some 200 fans brought down walls and pillars of Dhoni's house, which is under construction, in the eastern city of Ranchi to protest the 26-year-old player's performance in India's shocking defeat in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
India were all out for 191, with Dhoni returning to the pavilion without scoring in India's match on Saturday, a shock to the cricket-mad country of 1.1bn people.
"Dhoni die, die," protesters chanted, burning effigies of the player, who has scored 1 958 runs in 68 one-day international matches and is counted among India's most aggressive batsmen, an AFP reporter at the site reported.

They're tired of his current form but remember his awesome contributions. He's way ahead in the 100s list in ODI and aggregates
and MoM awards.
Dhoni is a younger guy and relative newbie. His zero has not gone well. This was a knee jerk reaction on his failure to score in this important
match.
Sehwag is most hated now on current form. He should consider settling down in WI if Ind rolls out of the WC !
Cricket's more than a game in India.

Have we lost the very purpose of sports? It is the ability to accept victory and defeat in the same spirit and carry on with the game. Bangladesh is an up and comming test side. If India took it light it is the fault of the administration but on the other hand cricket is a game of luck. On a good day you can beat anybody, on bad day you will loose to anybody. Feel sorry for Dhoni. He is such a good player. being passionate is one thing and being maniacs is a another thing.

Completely agree. Dhoni is too good a player actually.
This event is ridiculous and insane, adds unecessary pressure on players.

The behaviour of Indian cricket fans has been abysmal. Remember what happened in the 96 semi finals with Sri Lanka.

come 23rd March and I am sure the rest of the team members property will be vadalised since that will be a do or die game for Indians.
I think money has made a lot of a say here as with $$$$$$ the players have so many other priorities and dont care about the nationalism or wining other than the $$$$$$.
this is not new to indians as in the last WC-2003 after a poor showing in the preliminary stage, Mohmd. Kaif's house was stoned and rest was history
as India came upto finals and becase runner up.
lets see how it will do this time around?
Anyway our Ranatunga's, de Silva's etc., are very lucky though they SOLD the outcome of many a matches the general public do worship them as we do to our politicians., they are treated like demi GODS !

It is always a very small number spoil the things for a nation.
Remember, Sri Lankans should know it better.
We have had our share of church burns, riots, etc..

Come on let's keep this discussion to sports. Be a sport and do not spoil the spirit.

Attacking players' homes is ridiculous. Dhoni commands sort of a cult status in Indian cricket. The expectations are too high. And the average indian fan seems to be a sort of thankless creature, forgetting what the cricketers have done in the past at the drop of a hat.
Fortunately, the average Sri Lankan is not such a lunatic, and I don't think any of us wish the least (bodily or other) harm to our cricketers even when they get trounced in such any fashion.
Now even if India beat Sri Lanka, they'll need to root for bermuda in the bermuda vs bangladesh match... a match where bangladesh will know exactly how much they need to get into the super 8. Sorry situation really.

If certain Christians didn't go around trying to convert people left and right through unethical means of proselytism there would've been no "church burnings" in Sri Lanka. These Christian groups have no one else to blame but themselves. One only need to look at India to see the turmoil they are creating with their extremism and facistic tendencies.
