Munza Mushtaq in Colombo, Wed Mar 14 13:21:50 EDT 2007
Reporters Without Borders condemns the government's decision to freeze
the assets of CBE, a company owned by Tiran Alles which owns the
Sinhalese-language weekly Mawbima. Coming after the arrests of two of
Mawbima's employees, it has forced the newspaper to suspend
operations. CBE's assets were frozen on 8 and 9 March. The assets of
Standard Newspapers Private Ltd were also frozen yesterday.

Suppression of media is a grave threat to democracy. This time, MR could have taken a more soft stance. But the other side of the story that never gets written here is also grave. Those who know the facts know that Alles is a top drug dealer in Sri Lanka. He started a newspaper company not because he love free media, but to run his human rights shield to cover the formidable force against his contractors. He could not tolerate the dissapearances of the layer bellow him. The best trump the drug lords pull out is human rights, and they plant few people to cheer it up. To topple the Government that took a hard stand against him, he took issues from the war zone, and it is suspected that he got weapons trafficking contracts from LTTE through his well established logistic network to move illegal stuff from point A to B. But it is only a suspicion. In any case, MR could have frozen all other businesses he had leaving the newspaper. maybe MR got the confirmation information that he is upto something with LTTE. So, lets not shout without knowing the full story.

good point about shouting. now, lets not shut down a newspaper and several other organizations without proper investigations and proof. the govt cant just go in destroy the honest livelihood of the people in this country. im not talkig about Alles. im talking about the regular people who work there and in the other places the govt has shut down. if indeed this guy is a drug lord - arrest the drug lord. if indeed he helped the LTTE, arrest him immediately - if there is proof.
i want to hear what MR has to say about this now..

Good Job MR, your family waited 50 plus years to come to where you are, The Bandas took you to the cleaners. Don't let this slip, rest of Srilanka can wait.
News papers what News papers, call all the buggers traitors if they push the wrong button. The LTTE does a damn fine job at this. We are true sons of the soil, Lions and Tigers, indeed.

Now thats a quite juicy piece of information. Of course assuming that you are one of those people
"who know the facts" can you please devolve the facts for the following?
Tiran Alles was the head at the AirPort.. So by your information Mahinda our benovelent leader put a known drug dealer in charge of the Air Port where all sundry drug dealers enter the resplendent island.
It was widely reported that after the Elections Mahinda went and embraced Tiran Alles. So our worthy soon to be exective President was consorting with a known drug dealer. And Poor Anandarajh lost his IGP post because he was
pictured with a drug dealer while back!!
It was also reported that Tiran Alles served as the "go between" for the UPFA and the LTTE before the November elections. So I would assume that the LTTE was also "In the know" and therefore refused to deal with a known drug dealer?
Again I am not questioning the veracity of your "facts" but just that your facts brought up a lot of questions in my mind..

This is absolutely terrible news. I agree with ain23, you just simply cannot shut, freeze media organizations in a democratic country. There may be conspirators, but without proofs, you cannot make decisions that is only going to reflect bad on the GOSL.

the fact that this article contains NO REASONS for why the govt chose to freeze funds just goes to make this govt. look like a dictatorship. whats next? Gestapo? Soviet-style hit squads?
