CPJ troubled by second arrest at a critical newspaper in Sri
Yahoo, Thu Mar 1 23:12:32 EST 2007
New York, March 1, 2007—The Committee to Protect Journalists is troubled by the arrest on Saturday of the publisher of the Sunday Standard and Sinhala-language Mawbima newspaper in Sri Lanka.
The editors of Mawbima said that Dushyantha Basnayake’s arrest was part of a “campaign of harassment” against the newspaper which began after it published articles criticizing Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse and reporting on accusations of human rights violations committed by his brother, Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse.
“We had to think twice before writing any story that exposed corruption in any Ministry under President Rajapakse,” the editors wrote in a statement issued Monday. “Most times we were forced to cancel such articles.”

Quote:“We had to think twice before writing any story that exposed corruption in any Ministry under President Rajapakse,”
lucky that no members in this forum have to go through the hell.
"kolampatta kiri appita kekkari" is how Sinhalese politicians running the show.
Almost 75% people among Sinhalese are coming from poor villages who have been cheated like Tamils by the name of war.
premadasa's garments to Chandrikas white pigeons to Mahinda's chintanaya all aimed to cheat those villagers and young people!!
Today what happened to them ?
90% closed and or no trace.
Anuradhapura (holy city) today turned into a prostitute valley most of them from those closed factories !!
Army deserters are pimps who have re-join invitations to the army again.
By sending his son to navy and immediately dispatched to UK must be the top cheating tactics MR ever come against his own people..
It is true, tamils will have no chance go against cruel behaviour of the Govt.
But Sinhalse too cant express their views in any way. Typical example is the heading of this post
MR never got 100% support from the people but thinks he is.
Three brothers going to ruin many things, only time will tell us.
Except the fact their time is fast running out!!!

Where are all those MR supporters?
Those regulars at LA who campaigned for MR! Where are they?
Like those poor peasants who are tricked by clever politicians, these LA regulars also have been tricked into supporting MR.
The politicians who promise that they would thrash LTTE get elected.
But subsequently these polititians are only busy with their own private business.
Shouldn't we now stop LTTE bashing and start MR bashing?

Should the label "journalist" grant legal immunity
A few weeks ago when the military arrested the so-called 3 journalists there was a huge cry by the LTTE pimps in the TLA forum about the democracy/media freedom of the present government. They all went silent after the release of the videos of the 3 men confessing to have worked for the LTTE.
Now again the arrest of this editor has agitated the champion defenders of the LTTE regarding the democrtic principles of the GOSL. While its heartning to see that you are GENUINELY interested about the democratic rights of the people of this terrorist ridden nation, I would advice you to please be patient. This is not an abduction. This is an arrest. If there is evidence that these journalists have worked for the LTTE you will soon get to know it. If there isnt they'll be released.
I for one dont beleive that anybody who carries a media ID ought to get immunity from being investigated/arrested.

Re: CPJ troubled by second arrest at a critical newspaper in
You are reporting this from NewYork.
I have a question.
The two main roles who are ruining the democracy, freedom, human rights and countries development are two USA citizens. Is this the standard of USA?.
But Definitely the USA will not say anything against them, because these two will get commitions 10% of Sri Lanka's National expences and finally it willbe taken to USA. So America will be more rich.
Our kids will get more burden of loans taken by MR to do nothing.
Anyway the "Medamulana Gang" will rule the country for 12 years by hook or by crook.
MR's son will be the Navy commander in next 10 years. Or he will come from UK after training stay in colombo head quarters and then come to Gotabhaya's post. (Not bad nohow patriotic he is ?)
This is the democracy of "Sri Rohona Olamottala".
I think Premadasa was much more cleverer in good and bad everything than this gang, even he was an isolated man.

So this is different from previous abductions???
Earlier they were abducet and confessed that they are terrorists. These 2 journalists are in custody one over 3 months and other few days without any charges????
Even little kids know why this editor was taken in.
Being journalist is not a legal coverage to to illegal things and it is not a reason to face to unethical harrasments too.
I think the media freedom and democracy are at very low level now.
Previous governments also did to some extent but they were not naked like these "Madamulana Gang"

How come you are so sure about that? Are you on government payroll?
You know what I think?
This is just blunder after blunder by the brothers. They just want to make
some quick bucks, and anybody comes into their way is eliminated one way
or other.

 Re : Karu 007
I am not a government servent nor a Mahinda Rajapakse stooge. Just a die-hard anti terrorist Sri Lankan.
Like any other peace loving Sri Lankan I too sincerely hope this country can be a democratic similar to a 1st world nation. But be realistic.....
This country of ours will never be democratic
There never will be 100% press freedom
There will always be human suffering
And it will remain a third world nation
UNTIL WE ELIMIATE THIS MENACE CALLED THE LTTE (or LTTE GENUINELY giveup violence).

Yes you are right Lakshman!!! MR is the biggest Kotti in SL now….Just read the following text from an article to show his true color and he can do anything to keep his lavish life style.
"……………Small wonder then that when Friday dawned and a Rajapakse victory was confirmed, the new president-elect violently hugged Aviation Authority Chairman Tiran Alles as he walked into Temple Trees and thanked him for making it all possible. Alles, whose support had been solicited by Minister Mangala Samaraweera had been the chief negotiator with the LTTE on the UPFA’s behalf. Alles, following a series of dialogues with the Kilinochchi leadership, finally ensured that the rebels called a boycott of last Thursday’s poll, effectively snatching certain victory from Wickremesinghe and handing it over to Rajapakse on a silver platter. ..........”

Dear Lakshman Wickremaarchi,
The agreement is that Mahinda Aiya will clear the Kotti in the east first and give Velupillei 6-12 months time before starting to do the same in North.
Velupillei on his part will will try to assasinate his brothers and any others that will be a problem to LTTE, but leave out MR (for getting 6-12 months time before being attacked in the North)
By the way is that your real surname..... just curious because that's not the way that name is normaly spelt
