Post Ranil lashes out at Rajapaksa regime

COLOMBO: In a hard-hitting speech, Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday told Parliament that after the recent induction of defectors from his party into the Government the United National Party (UNP) finds it "impossible" to work with the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government.

Post UNP
This cross over by 18 senior UNPs is good for Ranil. He can build up the party with some young people loyal to him.
The total number of preferential votes polled by these 18 MPs is less than half a million, all that will remain with UNP.
Will all 18 get SLFP nomination in the next general election? In which districts?

Those who get SLFP nomination will either get elected or lose. Those who get elected will consider crossing over again, if the other side has more seats and if the price is right.

Those who do not get SLFP nomination would be welcome to join the UNP before the election and be included in the UNP list.

And, good for both Ranil and the UNP, if Ranil too decides to join the 18.

It is time for a truly democratic alternative party that believes in free enterprise without uncontrolled corruption to come up. The Liberal Party can consider making a comeback.

Where are you Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha?

Prof. Wijesinghe now teaches at Sabaragamuwa Uni and is a strong supporter of MR. I don't think he will come out against MR for the time being.[/quote]

It is not to come out against MR. There is a large number of frustrated UNP votes (out of nearly 50% at the 2005 election) floating around for someone to pick up.

It is a grand opportunity for a corruption-free, pro-free enterprise, democratic party to establish itself among the electorate.

If MR does not settle the ethnic problem, that will destroy him.

If MR sorts out the ethnic problem, corruption will become the main election issue. Of course, if the MR administration does not get tarnished by corruption, it will be fighting corruption and will be unbeatable for sometime to come.

Still, there is a dire need for a decent non-leftist opposition party.

Ironically, Ranil can perform his most effective act as the Leader of the Opposition, if he resigns from the leadership now. The magnificant 18 will be in a real fix.

The UNP is not Ranil. Ranil the loser should have resigned when he lost the last election. He tries to project himself as a decent gentleman but that comes across rather lamely and he is seen as a spineless transvestite by the public. Add to that his penchant for trying to stay at the top after losing the ultimate election... and so much for his "decency".

The UNP would still be better off if Ranil also crossed over.

Ranil does not have principles that are transparent and is a leopard in a goat’s skin. He tries to make us believe that he is a lover of democracy but runs his party as a dictator. He doesn’t demonstrate that he wants to preserve the party rather than looking after his own position as it is his God given right. Otherwise, he would have allowed the party constitution to be amended enabling the democratic process to choose the most suitable leader.

How many election losers in SL have resigned in the past ??

Infact over 200,000 sinhala votes were robbed from UNP by the JVP's false allegation of "Ali Koti Hora Givisuma". So Mahinda R and Wimal W should have resigned when tamils of North did not turn up for voting.

I am not a Ranil W fan, but I think UNP deserved a win after 11 yrs of corrupt and inefficient rule of CBK. She herself admitted that toppling Ranil W was the biggest mistake she made.

RW has invited those crossed over to join him again says Tissa Attanayaka. The bad eggs will become good ones by crossing back. It could be now, later or election time.

Why now?  So, does he think it is easier to work with LTTE?
Why can’t he think this as his performance appraisal?

In the 70s, when JR (UNP) came to power, he swept the seats so much, the minority Tamils become the leader of opposition.  That gave the opportunity for the leader of opposition to go around the world using state money to set the stage for the next three decades of misinformation war and Tamil nationalism.

The policies of PA and UNP is clear:  One caters to Sri Lankans  and the other to the international community.

The people broke away UNP will go back in a NY second if the price is right since they have no backs and loyalty.  Ranil shouldn’t feel so bad now.

What exactly does robbing votes mean? The ppl voted. They chose to believe. You call that robbing? Sour grapes. Why should MR and WW resign? They won the damn election.

CBK admitted nothing of the sort. She did not like the Mad Retard. That was how she ran her life... on pure subjectivity. And on top of that, Ranil was family after all.

How many losers of presidential elections have tried to hold onto power after losing the election? that would be more relavant. Being pro-UNP is one thing. Trying to justify it is another.
