Bribes to Sri Lanka officials: Pak in fire-fighting mode
tribuneindia.com, Mon Jan 8 21:15:38 EST 2007
Pakistan government machinery is in a tizzy after “The Tribune’s” December 24 expose of bribes being paid to Sri Lankan officials to clinch arms deals. As a result, hectic fire-fighting efforts are being launched by Islamabad.
Pakistan has issued a directive to all its government defence suppliers --HIT, POF, AWC, Sigma etc-- to make the kickback payments only in cash. They have barred them from making any cheque payments or making payments in tax havens like St.Kitts - at least till the matter dies down.
People, who are familiar with the process involved in defence deals, have commented that the only way payments can now possibly be made is either through illegal money laundering, or, the safest method is to disburse money through Pakistan embassy in Colombo. The latter essentially means cash transfers in diplomatic bags.

Everyone knows the kick back from the arms deal for SL. Since 83', many people got fat and fatter till today due to this. Whether it's from PAK, IND, CHA, US, UK or even Israel, kickbacks are offered from the President to defence sectretary to high ranking military officials in SL. Though it's sad, it's the fact.
But The Indian Tribune is surely adding spice by going to the extend of sizing the bags to carry cash. Everybody knows that India kicked our A.. when we request for military support as they feared Vaiko led TN.
Since arms are a comodity and it's a highly profitable business, PAK and China seize the oppertunity. So now no point of crying for the spilled milk. Anyway it's a blessing in desguise that India turned SL down on Arms supply. If not they can pressure us more even by holding the required armentments on time to Our forces while TN supplies the Terrorist.
If everyone is concerned over the arms deals, push Sun-goat to giveup the arms.

Sounds to me more like a cry baby India whining about Pakistan selling arms to Sri Lanka, and making up bogus claims to upset the SL-Pak relationship. If you will not sell arms to Sri Lanka, why get your panties in a knot when Sri Lanka gets them from Pakistan? Grow up India and stop acting like such a child.

We know why the war budget was doubled from last year of US$650million to US$1.3billion.
Commission a's having there field day.
The politicians will get their swiss accounts fattened.
Mahindana Chinthana delivering it's promises.
Truly patriot politicians.
With the commissions that politicians taking alone, we can build the Norochcholai power plant (cost US$400Milion) by our own money without borrowing fron China.

Hello there Negembo,

Well I am right here!
I can see tyou have a big problem with the war budget. You are assuming if the war budget was cut, and some kind of political solution was put in place, the threat from LTTE would disappear. Is this so? What guarantees do you have that military will no longer be needed? A weaker and under funded military is what you want isn’t it? May be you know something I am not aware of. I will be the devils advocate. Please run me through your plan on how things will work after cutting the defence budget.

There's another way to look at it. Pakistani arms dealers can afford to be corrupt and dishonest because nobody else is selling weapons to Sri Lanka.
Is there a way for Sri Lanka to gain better access to the (legitimate) arms market?

You missed my point and the topic & message of this news item.
Bribes to Sri Lanka officials:...
Probably you missed it purposely.
The war budget is leaking to politicians bank accounts via tax havens like St.Kitts.

I see, I mistakenly thought you had some issue with the size of the defence budget.

Yes, my policy is very similiar to Vatican for example. The policy is peace and friendship, but also dont mind having a well equipped military on the side purely for defence.
