Colombo - The new year dawned with a fresh wave of violence in Sri Lanka, claiming the lives of 10 people in the northern and eastern parts of the island, military officials said Monday.
Suspected Tamil rebels set off a claymore mine, killing two policemen and injuring another in Chettikulam Vavuniya, 240 kilometres north of the capital Monday evening, a military spokesman said.
