Post Sri Lanka president open to talks with rebels
people.com.cn,  Mon Jan  1 10:34:36 EST 2007

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said Sunday his government was committed to keep the process of negotiations with the Tamil Tiger rebels open in order to solve the ethnic separatist conflict.

"With all the development work the government has implemented the peace negotiation process and it also will be continued," Rajapakse told a gathering of state employees here Sunday.

The process of direct negotiations with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) started in 2002 is currently stalled with the escalation of violence undermining the Norwegian backed peace facilitation process.

Post Let LTTE lay down the arms first.
We should not make the same mistake that Ranil made. We should insist LTTE to lay down the arms, denounce violence by word and deed before any talks. If not, they will be destroyed by using the same Tamils (eastern) whom Prabakaran pinned his hopes.

I disagree here. The 'peace period' is the one that weakened the Terrorists. And see how the LTTE demands deterioted at every step of the 'peace-talks'.
When they started back in 2002-2003, the demand is for 'Interim Administration'. It gradually dropped, and at the latest round it was to 'open A-9 highway'.

Peace talks will further destroy LTTE, and will also let other Tamils see the outside world. More and more Tamils realise now that it is the LTTE that is destroying them. If this trend continue, LTTE leaders will be gone in a year or two-

I beleive GOSL is in the right track now. -Isolate LTTE politically, target the leadership and remove them, tighten the finances, encourage alternate Tamil leadership.. these are the steps in the right direction..

Hope more civilians will escape from Vanni so that SLAF can bomb the hell out of LTTE. Suspect each and every Tamil living in the South and keep a constant surveillance on their movements. They should check each and every passenger thoroughly before boarding into buses and trains. Buses and trains should have armed guards. Any one who helps terrorists to carry out these dastardly acts should be given death penalty.

Yes MR should make SL a military state. They should increase securtyy checking in COlombo and in other parts of SriLanka as well, to prevent the bombs.

COlombo is seeing a large reduction of traffic & people movement in last month.
Probably they should close Colombo for civilians for it be safe for our beloved politicians.

And also GOSL should build more luxury bunkers in COlombo for rest of our ministers in case terrorists attack from air.

MR should first put forward a comprehensive proposal for a federal solution, then call for talks using that as a platform. A need to prosecute war would then be clear to everyone including the government and the people. You are wasting your breath by saying "We should insist LTTE to lay down the arms, denounce violence by word and deed before any talks"

I have nothing against Tamils who prefer to live with Sinhalese, Moors, Malays and Burghers as Sri Lankans. I am only against racist LTTE terrorists. It is sad when we have to suspect each and every Tamil living in the south as there's no way to identify a terrorist from a decent law abiding Tamil. Blame LTTE scums for creating this unpleasant situation. I am confused as to why there are no mass demonstrations by Tamils living in the south against LTTE barbarians in spite of all the misery they have inflicted on Tamils living in the North and East.
