Post Lanka polls: Rajapakse takes early lead
NDTV,  Thu Mar 30 23:47:36 EST 2006

Early results from Sri Lanka's local elections showed President Mahinda Rajapakse's coalition with a strong lead.

The polls are being seen as a referendum on Rajapakse's policies and support of a peace process with Tamil rebels.

Rajapakse's United Peoples' Freedom Alliance won majorities in 43 out of 51 local councils where results were declared, compared with seven for the main opposition United National Party.

Its a pity to see UNP led by feeble clown called Ranil is fighting hard to secure second/third places in some of the Pradeheeya shaba...

Good thing that Mahinda and not CBK was in power, otherwise JVP would have easily won bulk of pradeheeya sabas in Hambanthota district...

JVP has grab considerable share of JHU votes on their account by adopting much of JHU policies (thats good if JVP genuinly implement those)...

Still I would have prefered if true petriotic Sri lankans vote JHU directly rather than JVP. Because JHU is more reliable and genuine petriotic party than JVP. But I am not disapointed at all of JHU's performance first time contesting local elections and JHU is more a party of national interests than local goverment issues...

all and all UNP lead by ever loosing Ranil is the ultimate looser..

Its interesting to see finally what is the persentage of vote that UNP can secure out of total votes... I bet its gonna be the worst persentage in the history for UNP... I like it, because I like party with NGOs, Maharaja, Kotalawala, tax evedors, drug mafia,,,never having gust to even to condemn an killing by facist terrorists  is diminished my mother land...

Mahinda you win the election because,,
you have human nature ..
you are courageous to eliminate terrorism from this country..
you are courageous to eliminate drugs/smuggling from this country..
you love the children of this country....
you will not betray this country to NGO's , Norway or Maharaja, kothalawal gang of businessmans with ulterior motives...

Great victory for MR. He has shown that he has what it takes to win elections without the help of the JVP. He should call a general election and get rid of the JVP and JHU who are doing everything in their power to divide the country and make us a new Ethiopia.

You are a bogus friend of Mahinda. You like to see Mahinda contesting alone and defeat.. Why new election, while JVP and JHU supporting him,, To govern you need majority, and he has that.. so why bother of elections,,, Mahinda has been for unitery state.. UPFA's win is for unitery state of Sri Lanka. fedaral bias UNP is the defeating party...

JVP has increased its vote bank...

Winner is Mahinda..
Looser is Ranil (as usual)..
JVP has strenthend by eroding into JHU votes..
JHU need to consolidate its state in the future,, because JHU is more genuine petriotic party than JVP (which has been spoiled somewhat by maxism)..

As long as JHU is strong there will be handfull of parties to implement its nationalist policies except UNP which has trap in NGO and Norawa,, and not seems to be in a position to come out of it...

If MR contests alone, he wont have to be a hostage to the JVP anymore. The results show the JVPs true standing. It is the SLFPs vote bank that out JVP to where it is today. JVP is nowhere without SLFP - not vice versa.

It is time for JHU to keep away from politics and the lead the path shown by Lord Buddha and try to be true buddhists.

Not Samy (Sadhu) in the daytime, Army by night.

JayPee,
You are absolutely correct with your astute comment.  For the greater good of the country and in order to solve the most important national question, if the extremists in his side such as JVP and JHU continue to obstruct the peace process and consequent development, the president should shed these extremists from his aliance and call for an election (parliamentary) so that something could be achieved without gridlock and to avoid further destruction, let alone seperation.  Let's embrace the will of the majority of the people of whole Sri Lanka.  Ignore the unjust extreme views of a southern tiny but vocal minority that won't even amount to 15% when you consider the whole of Sri Lanka.  President should work on the overwhelming majority of about 85 to 90% of citizen's mandate!

Even without an election, UNP and other moderate parties should recogize the situation and accept citizens' verdict and provide their fullest support to the president to solve the real problems, particularly the national question, of the country in a timely manner as there is not much time left!

Post Unitery ???
What a joke ?

".......so why bother of elections,,, Mahinda has been for unitery state.. UPFA's win is for unitery state of Sri Lanka. fedaral bias UNP is the defeating party... "

Gemunu Watch is not aware that Mahinda R dropped "unitery" just a few weeks after 17 Nov election and replaced by United/Federal - the same stuff UNP originated.

This election results show that the majority of SLankan voters are for for this approach for peace - originated by Ranil - taken forward by Mahinda R. Although I was a UNP voter (Nov 05 election) I am happy that majority of voters understand Mahinda's approach and voted again for him.

Only JVP and JHU still crying and trying (to some extent - succesfully !) for non-viable alternatives. Please dont obstruct Mahinda's correct path which he realised recently.

Post Extremists routed
Sri Lanka's Marxists and the main party of Buddhist monks, who both oppose Norwegian-backed peace moves, were routed as the president's party obtained a landslide victory in local council elections.

Sri Lankan voters have shown they do not support hardline or extremist parties," said Jayadeva Uyangoda, head of political studies at Colombo University. "This is good news for President Rajapakse."

President should utilize the political capital he obtained wisely and effectively to solve the national question and other major problems of the country expeditiously.

Post Mahinda Chintanaya
Some of you in this Forum are still not aware that JVP anf JHU contested alone in this Local Election.
Taking UPFA victory as JVP victory.
It is time for MR to remove some part of Mahinda Chintanaya which were included because of JVP and JHU.
Well , he has already removed some by going to Geneva to talk Peace....

I guess MR will win any election as long Ranil is the leader of UNP.

Secondly, I dont think he is so stupid to walk into LTTE trap to bring UNP back to power by going to an early general election.

This the best thing happen to SL peace loving public Laughing .It's high time that MR join with UNP for atleast for a short period to push forward a acceptable solution to all three major communities.

I think the best way forward is to agree on a southern concensus about what sort of a polotical solution we can give to LTTE and to diccuss that with them with out wasting time.

If LTTE  do not agree to it it should be an all out war to deaft them so all the peace loving citizens can develop our beloved country in to a booming economy in asia.

I personally think the 'Indian model 'of devolution is best solution b'cos

1) over 6 million tamils live in India under that system

2)Been a major power in the sub continent India will never allow futher devolution to happen just 32 KM away in SL.

3)Most importantly any devolution that gives excesive powers to the northern region will not be acceptable to the We the sinhala majority in the country since most of the tamil parties still dreaming about creating a tamil elam/homeland.

I urnestly hope MR will act as a true patriot and shake hand with UNP for a lasting peace.Afterall unity among the southern politicall parties will  be the worts nightmare to prabakaran whether it's peace or war.

Sri Lanka on Thursday voted at local elections after a lacklustre campaign where even the usually divisive peace process was pushed to the background, officials and analysts said.

"This is not an election that will impact on the peace process," said Sunanda Deshapriya, director at the Centre for Policy Alternatives think tank. "The peace issue was left out of the campaign by almost all the key parties."

Tamil politician Dharmalingam Sidhathan said he did not believe the election "will impact on the peace process".

From the above posts people seem to think this was a general election or something. This was simply for local councils.

And here we have pundits going on about overhauling the "peace process" and what not. Highly amusing. Please do get a grip.

But let that not take anything away from Mahinda's victory.

Seems like the people have once again rejected the UNP and have given preference to Mahinda Chinthanaya.

I see a lot of people who were screaming about Mahinda being a "hardliner" during the Presidential Elections and supporting the UNP to the hilt are now happy that Mahinda has won.

LOL! So the hardliner and his party won again in superior fashion!
