The Sri Lankan government is bringing up the child soldier issue to cover up their inability to implement the terms of the 2002 Ceasefire in full (which they agreed, yet again, to implement in full at the Geneva talks in February).  If they are genuinely concerned about human rights issues then its good – while they are at it they can withdraw from civilian homes that they are occupying in North and East as part of their so called High Security Zones (HSZs) as they agreed to do under the terms of the 2002 Ceasefire Agreement.  Also, they could revive the aid-sharing agreement (P-TOMS) so that thousands of tsunami affected civilians in the North and East can get back to their normal lives instead of languishing in temporary shelters – then perhaps there could be a holistic solution to the child soldier problem!

You are not talking about CFA PAL, You are just talking about tamil needs. If you are a responsible person, you must first ask LTTE to behave and obey the rule of the law in the country. then everything will work out easily.

What a waste of time ???

Everyone knows that tigers will not giveup on this and many pro-tigers are supportive of this. The world community including UN, Swiss, Norway and many NGO's are supportive of this as none of them wont take a taugh messures agains them. If this was a muslim fundemental group certainly US would have suppress these issuses. But majority of the Tigers and Pro-tigers are for the cross.

Unless the GOSL wants to drag the talks or abruptly terminate the same, it's best they talk something sensible other than this area.

IF THESE SO CALLED OPPRESSED PEOPLE ARE SUPPORTIVE AND NEGLECT THE FACT THAT SUN-GOD AND HIS CLOSE ASSOCIATES OFF-SPRINGS ARE IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES HAVING A GOOD EDUCATION, WHY DOES THE GOSL SHOULD BURN THE FINGERS TALKING A ACT OF LIKE THIS ????

Because they are still (at least offcially) children of mother lanka... Tamil Eelam is still not offcialy recognized, despite every effort by the JVP and JHU to get the international community to recognize it.

See this quote from the weekend newspapers...

[i]A major reason for the West's leniency towards the LTTE is due to recognition of the fact that the root cause of the Sri Lankan problem lies in Sinhala chauvinism and resultant policies. The cry for separation and armed struggle arose because of this. The LTTE is only a virulent by-product of this. The emergence of the national socialist JVP and Sinhala supremacist JHU help reinforce these beliefs. The election of Mahinda Rajapakse on a chauvinist mandate is another pointer.

So for the West or even India to crackdown on the LTTE and leave the field clear to the Sinhala fascists and chauvinists is simply not on at this point of time. This is something the Sinhala hardliners fail to understand and if recent history is an indication, never will. The best friends of the LTTE are the Sinhala chauvinists. If there is one segment of Sri Lankan society that is not under LTTE threat it is this chauvinist element. The LTTE needs them badly.

Just a point of clarification: the High secuity zone issue is covered in the CFA - refer to Clauses 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 of the CFA.  These clauses have not been implemented by the Sri Lankan Governement in breach of the CFA signed in Feb 2002.
