S.Lanka rebel peace team nabbed with gun catalogues
reuters.co.uk, Tue Mar 7 07:44:30 EST 2006
COLOMBO (Reuters) - Tamil Tiger rebels were delayed on their return from peace talks in Europe on Tuesday after airport customs officials in Sri Lanka found gun catalogues in their luggage and briefly confiscated them.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were also forced to pay $380 (218 pounds) in duty on a range of new items including electric razors, head-mounted torches and digital cameras, officials said. The Tigers had no immediate comment.
"There had been some catalogues of small guns and weapons, like shotguns and revolvers," Sarath Jayatilake, Director General of Customs, told Reuters.
"This was taken over by customs, and thereafter they have examined this with the military specialists ... and then finally they have decided there was no offensive

 Provocation mission
Hope the south will not fall into the trap. I see no reason for them to bring these catalogues other than to provoke a response from the South. In this digital age why bother with paper !

Other possibilities could be ignorance, arrogance, bravery, negligence .... ?

LTTE branded as terreist by the former terreist group JVP. This time coustom officials found some booklets about the guns from the so called terreist LTTE.Could the Minister of diffence or his deputy or his Secretary or IGP or any of the military intlegence tell us where are those weapons used by the NOW DEMOCARTIC JVP during 1971 and 1987-1989.

Oh! Yeah!
LTTE is going to make peace with getting some GUNS from their Nordic mentors. The foreign element in the LTTE terror must be dealt by the GOSL!
LTTE needs the support of GOSL to continue their crimes in Sri lanka. That is the essence of the talks. Will GOSL do the same like the UNP again?

LTTE which is able to get hold of MBRLs , 120 mm Artilary guns and SAMs are really worried by these magazines got discoveried by the SL Customs! The customs guys should know the LTTE don't give a damn about these so they brought openly.

Actually LTTE went to Nordic countries for new arms deals. On the way they met some Sri Lankan minister (just waste of time) As Bala said earlier they had nice food and women thanks to Norway. What is wrong with bringing back of the catalog that they ordered?

Because you are living in an area with no electricity and the only way to get an internet connection is to set up a direct satellite link, which VP would consider a dead give-away to any enemies wishing to fire missiles.
But the real reason for the gun catalogs is that the LTTE has been seriously affected by the US ban on them, and wishes to make amends by purchasing the appendages of a true freedom-loving all-american patriot.

This shows how effective, honest and efficient our customs service is.
Not even a catalogue (later found to be no offensive kind of literature) can get through without detection.
Guns, landmines, grenades, armoured cars, tanks, four-wheel drives, luxury items, drugs?
Never, ever.
Don't worry, as long as we have our customs service, Sri Lanka is safe from any type of terrorism.

Stupid Pulidevan obviously forgot the usual procedure at customs. The customs officer usually leaves his/her draw open. Then you need to slip in a few thousand rupees on the sly. If not you have to go through this kind of hassle.

 Go Customs!
All this time, we had some hope;
That one day, we will thwart LTTE terrorism.
But now, with SL Customs fighting on our behalf,
Brother, we are in real real strife.

Listen everyone, just because you have a catalogue, that dosnt mean you own or purchased what's in it. Just because you got a Rolls or Learjet catalogue, it's not always a case of owning or making purchase. There are people who collect various catalogus as hobbies.
Once BALA said, when they went for brothel houses while in Bangkock, they never brought back those leaflets that are normally stick under the romm door.
As someone said, this could be purely, ignorence, arrogonce, provocative etc.. acts only. Beside that there's no ban in having a Gun catalogue in your baggage, unlike pornography.
