Post Tamil Tigers accuse Sri Lanka government of failing to honor
Associated Press,  Tue Feb 28 08:41:08 EST 2006

    COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) _ Tamil Tiger rebels on Monday accused Sri Lanka's government of not honoring commitments given at the just-concluded Geneva talks by failing to crack down on an armed member of a rival Tamil group in the north. The member of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party was seen traveling with a handgun on government-controlled Delft island on Friday and government troops did nothing to restrict him, the rebel group said. ``This is a violation of the cease-fire and words given by the government at Geneva,' said Daya Master, a spokesman for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, as the Tamil Tigers are formally known.

The Sri Lankans are back to square one. Will the April meeting be any different ?. I do not think so. The Government does not seem to have any clear position on the future of Sri Lanka. If it had only spent some time presenting its plans for constitutional reforms even if it meant circulating a proposal in writing and urging the LTTE to take it home and mull over it, the recent meeting in Geneva could have been described as a success. As it stands, the parties would return to Geneva with no sense of direction other than perhaps, hopefully, a warming up between the parties. This will not happen until they are left alone in the meeting place without foreign presence. I am only worried if the LTTE will insist on speaking Tamil only - the English speaking Tamils seem to have fled from the Government as well as the LTTE -  and the Government reacts in Singhalese only. The Sri Lankans will disagree on 2 + 2 = 4. Without good faith, and a capacity and readiness to follow logic and reason, there can never be an agreement. Some outsider has to step in and take the hard decisions for the Sri Lnakans. The British under the auspices of the UN ?.

amicus you got the points correctly.
GoSL are not having a vision for the country. They are making a huge mistake in the history. By having JVP around, MR thinks that LTTE (specially VP) is the only problem and problem can be solved by hitting LTTE back.
Their mentality and the background they have are not lead to a reasonable way of thinking and they are never going to realise this.
Say, if the country get a very bad .. war and even if this leads to a seperation of country still they will point fingers on others rather than realising the real world.
Many in south (specially the people who know very less about n-e) wrongly directed by the extrimist media in south and thinks that LTTE and tamils problem are wrong. But still they do not have any solution for anything.
But onething is sure. The next president will be a JVPer.

LTTE is the only problem now and be handled by the government. LTTE will complain anything against their opponents.

If EPDP carry guns all the time, they never lose their 150 members who were shot by LTTE after CFA. If government search LTTE homes, they can find more sophisticated weapons!

SATAN preach Bible!

Working with a translator does not present a particular problem. Jeyaraj is trilingual anyway.

The way things work in Sri Lanka, LTTE is the legitimate government. GOSL is the proscribed organization.

If LTTE also was that pessimistic about the outcome, they would not have been able to come this far. On the other hand, journalists, public and the GOSL have helped LTTE by accepting LTTE propaganda.

So, everybody respond to LTTE propaganda. No one think of what is happening or where should we lead or what should we talk.

LTTE have done an excellent job in propaganda. But in the war front they have screwed up.

LTTE have pawned the tamils too, therefore they survive.

IF WE HOLD LONG ENOUGH SRI LANKAN TAMILS WILL BE EXTINCT IN SRI LANKA.

What has happened is that the LTTE tries its best to misinterprit the agreement.  GOSL has agreed not to allow any groups other than SLA to carry arment operations in the areas under its controll.  LTTE misinterprit the statement as GOSL has greed to disarm Karuna. Even if the GOSL has agreed for that, how can they practically do it? Will US ever be able to disarm al-Quaida? GOSL should have been more open regarding the LTTE's unachiewable requests.  There is no argument that the only option left for VP and Pottu (not the LTTE) is the war.  If GOSL honestly wants to rescue the people in NE, they should be more open during the talks.  GOSL should have proposed to have Karuna, EPDP, PLOTE, TULF and all the other parties for the peace talks.  I am also skeptical about the move by MR government. My conclusions are as follows:

1. GOSL is expecting a deveoplment of strong opposition from people in the NE by allowing LTTE to dictate these people further;
2. Some rough elements in the present GOSL (same apllied to the previous governments) find their way to drag the war for their own benefits;
3. Those who participated for the talks or decision makers in GOSL have been bribed by outside forces.

GOSL should be responsible for maintaining law and order in the country and they should not exploit the suffering of the people in the NE as a test.

Post Carrying Weapons
In this particular case :

".............by failing to crack down on an armed member of a rival Tamil group in the north. The member of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party was seen traveling with a handgun on government-controlled Delft island on Friday and government troops did nothing to restrict him, the rebel group said. ........"

Yes, we all that according to Geneva talks GoSL should disarm Karuna and EPDP etc.
But how is this practically feasible to implement within such short time after the talks?. Or will it be possible even after several months?

An any case GoSL has the duty to take action on anybody (other than forces/police) carrying arms, not only NE - in the whole country.

But so many underworld gangs are in and around Colombo carry weapons, many business men, drug/kasippu dealers use guns. Even some 3 wheler drivers pullout a pistol to threaten the passenger when there is dispute.

I think it will be difficult to differentiate "paramilitaries" from others unless LTTE give a full list of names/ID nos of all paramilitaries.

This event can also be interpreted as as:

"An ordinary famer was seen traveling with a handgun on government-controlled Delft island on Friday and government troops did nothing to restrict him,"

Disarming gun paramilitaries by SLA in GOSL areas is just like asking police to stop criminals before any criminal activities happen, or go their homes and arrest them.

I'm absolutely with the Tigers. The GOSL should start to act immediately to show there sincererty towards the Geneva talks.

Tigers has stopped killing the Forces. To prove this they released the Police officers who was behind the peadohile. They are in the process of realeasing child soldiers at bunches (refere to a article apeared on academic). Just ignore the fact that they have been brain-washed and trained military.

Those were only the Tigers clauses against GOSL's clauses.

SO WHY CAN'T THE GOSL KEEP TO THEIR BARGAIN ????
