Post Maharaja pressure comes a cropper?
Munza Mushtaq in Colombo,  Mon Feb 20 12:08:12 EST 2006

All efforts by the Maharajah group and those who pushed for the
candidature of B. Sirisena Cooray ended in failure on Thursday when
the Elections Secretariat rejected the United National Party's (UNP)
nominations list to contest the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) at the
March 30th local government elections, a Weekend Tabloid published in
Colombo has claimed. The English language newspaper 'Weekend Standard', also alleged that
the Maharajah Group  had prevailed over the UNP hierarchy by winning
the struggle to make Sirisena Cooray the Colombo Mayoral candidate
wiping out all other powerful groups in the party who did their utmost
to make their own nominee the Mayoral candidate. Sirisena Cooray
submitted his nomination as the CMC Mayoral candidate on Thursday.

Post Everybody supports somebody
Everyone, rich businessman or poor,  has the right to support someone.
You do not ridicule just because you do not support that person.
No illegal deed has been done or reported in this case.

Obviously, someone supporting Sumathipala had written this report.

Sumathipala himself does similar things.

I didn't read the original article in the tabloid but based on this report, I didn't see anything about "buying" a politician. You and psilva must be rather naive to think that influential people don't affect who becomes the candidate in any political party. How do you think we've had 4 Bandaranayake's, three of them, not even very bright, holding leadership positions in the SLFP? In any case, this article is obviously biased, and one has to wonder whether certain losing candidates are trying to use the, always popular in Sri Lanka, race card, to cut their losses.

On a different note, judging only by the results, I would take American politics with its minor faults, any day, over SL politics.

Post Ah so Maharajah TVis a truly independent voice?
Rolling Eyes Laughing Ah so all you expatriates are experts on Lankan politics and American politics?

Maharaja TV was shamelessly one-sided biased and trying to dictate terms of the elections. It was like your American FOX news network.  It came close to propaganda and was only a bit better than State Run Media which is always controlled by the ruling party. MTV are an Indian concern spreading Indian culture such as crappy Hindi Movies and a load of western type garbage. They are rich and want to directly influence politics like Ken Lay and Cheney's cronies in your America.  Maharaja fund RW and Lasantha W is just a comic puppet in love with RW.  He was so silent when Tilanga Sumpathipala became UNP's chief organizer for NCP.  BEfore that when he was not A RW crony, LAsantha W blasted Tilanga even calling  him a murderer, bookiepala etc. Lasantha is a shameless RW lackey the same way he was an Anura Bandaranaike crony before he fell out. The ONLY honorable news paper in Sri Lanka is the Sunday Times and Daily Mirror Group and Island which  tends to bea bit chauvinist. COme to Sri Lanka brothers and smell the coffee and learn that these so called independent media organizations are beholden their paymasters just like Fox and Rupert Murdoch.   Twisted Evil Filthy Big Business is what Maharajah group is about.  Money Money and Contracts and Eelam funding.

When I got so bored and wanna some light jokes ("wikata"), I watch "Nirasa supar stars" program  Rolling Eyes

If people don't like Fox, they can always watch CNN.  In Sri Lanka also thre is a choice.  Watch Rupavahini.  I guess they are not going to send thugs to burn his business.

you know what's funny...whatever the media says or does Sri Lankans voted for who they wanted...majority ruled I guess. The consequences will be evident within the next ten years when race and ethnicity dictates who you are in Sri Lanka. I am sure many people will argue with me in saying that race and ethnicity is already a factor...all i am saying is unless you are a Sinhala Buddhist you will not be able to survive. The media can say and do whatever it wants, ultimately people vote for one reason...the name (ancestoral name like the Bandaranaikes) and their own family/area beliefs, i.e. if you are from Gampaha you would most likly vote for the SLFP! Personally, I don't like the owners of MTV coz not only do they represent the pseudo corporate tycoons of the west, but have no morals or ethics to guide their practice....but then again I guess I am expecting a lot here! What i am saying is, the Killi Rajamahendrans can attempt to influence the 'gullible' public all they want, but ultimately there is something more than Sirasa that effects the way people vote and think in Sri Lanka (i sure hope I am right, coz if i am wrong it would be depressing!!!!)

First, I do support what 'RogerThis' had to say. Word to word.

Second, since Nirupama_subramaniam mentioned about burning the business, let me mention this. For a fact, the Leader Publication was not burned down by the MR's goons (I'm not in the business of whitewashing him), but it was an inside petty job of Lasanthas own hand to give some milage to RW's campaing only. I do challenge this in open with evidence if Lasantha can prove otherwise.

Lasantha has no back bone as a journalist but is a shame for the whole journalist community only. The best example was like 'RogerThis' mentioned is how he kept mum about Thilangas entry to politics under UNP ticket to Anuradhapura. Till that time it was mud all over his paper with prisoners as evidence how he (Thilanga) tried to kill him (Lasantha).

Any way I doubt very much that Maharaja's influence is over. They are every where including with the tigers.

Agreed... However I tend to rate the Island, above Sunday Times...Which reminds me, there is a rumour that Sunday Times has lost Rajpal Abeynayake to Observer- unconfirmed as yet.. Any news on that...

Actually the burden of proof lies with the one who is making the assertion.

Post A suitable person !
According to the following news item from www.lankaenews.com - Mrs Bogollagama deserves a big post like mayor or deputy minister.

-----------------------
Geneva bound drunken ministerial wife

(Feb 20, 12.30 pm) It is reported that Minister Rohitha Bogollagamamone of the delegates of the Government negotiating team had left for Geneva with his wife and children last night (18) well in advance of other members of the team.

He had arrived late in the Katunayake airport much to the annoyance of fellow passengers as the flight was delayed until his arrival and his vixenish wife was intoxicated to boot.
She was so intoxicated that she had collapsed in a heap when she boarded the plane and was soon helped to her seat by a hostess.

Passengers were wondering whether it is in harmony with the 'Mahinda Chintana' to permit a Minister to enjoy a joy ride with his wife and kids on government expenses instead of participating at the talks, that could decide the fate of the country, in a responsible manner.

On an earlier occasion as well, 'Lanka e News' reported of a super luxury visit undertaken by the Minister to India with his whole family.
