Post Opposition Leader criticized for making anti-peace statement
Munza Mushtaq in Colombo,  Sat Feb  4 05:53:19 EST 2006

Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has come under considerable
flak for making negative statements with regard to the resumption of
peace talks scheduled to take place this month in Geneva.Several political parties and Ministers termed Wickremesinghe's
utterance as a 'childish and unbecoming' statement from a leader of a
respected political party in Sri Lanka. The UNP leader addressing a
meeting in Matara had said that talks in Geneva will fail unless the
Government agrees to disarm the Karuna faction.

Post Peace and RW
If the peace process is going ahead smoothly - the Govt  politicians have nothing to worry about what RW says in a meeting in Matara. Just go ahead with the good work.

Those MPs who crossed over from UNP to Govt side - have to make some noise and statements to show up their presence in the Govt side, people understand it.

Although the majority of those who voted were against RW - people know that RW is the person who started a genuine peace effort.

There is no doubt the disarmament of Colonel Karuna group is on the top of LTTE agenda in Geneva (if the LTTE shows up in Switzerland). The LTTE wants to repeat its 'success' of massacring unarmed PLOTE and EPDP members. Thanks to the Norwegian facilitators it was possible to disarme the Tamil dissidents and leave them unprotected. It’s like sending lamb to the slaughter; everyone should have known what would happen.

Will President Rajapakse be the same coward and disarm the Karuna group? Let us hope not. Colonel Karuna must be allowed to protect the Tamils living in the east from the LTTE barbarism. SL Army is not capable to do so, and then Colonel Karuna has to help his people.

Why should GOSL even consider to go to Geneva to talk to a terrorist organisation with no mass following? The Tamils has abandoned the LTTE and they can only stay in power with the help of arms.

Ranil W. should find something else to do than entertaining audiences with stupid remarks. What about opening Gay pride festivals in Europe?

In a few years from now you can look up the word traitor in Tamil and Sinhalese dictionary, and then you will see the picture of Ranil W.

What ever it is, GOSL should remove all the LTTE camps except in Kilinochchi and Mullativu. LTTE acitivites should be limited to areas beyond HSZ.

If LTTE asks GOSL to disarm Karuna group that will be a stupid demand. Because, karuna has already declared unilateral ceasefire. For everyone it is clear that LTTE is asking to disarm opponents so they can kill opponents without any interferance from the Opponent. On the other hand, implementation of disarmament will be a very questionable one.

As LTTE has a well established record that they never keep the word. In other words they are not trustworthy and responsible with respect to their words and deeds. The result will be CFA will fail. Karuna even if "disarmed" will be armed as soon as the Killing spree by LTTE begins.

As long as as LTTE remains irresponsible, GOSL can not implement a fair CFA.

Post Ranil.W & Proposed Peace Talks
Ranil.W has shown reality in his statement. Unless the SLArmy severs its links with the Karuna Faction, the latter will further disrupt the propoesd talks by more abductions & killings. The SLArmy is indisciplined and cannot be controlled by the generals & the C-in-C, the President. This is also a reality.

Post Ranil W. - S.B. Dissanyake is waiting for you in the prison
I would say the problem with the SL Army is that they are too disciplined. What other army in the World would have accepted orders to be sitting ducks for a terrorist organisation? After years of driving and airlifting the LTTE leaders the SL Army has become targets for the LTTE Claymore mines. Now the LTTE has decided the target practice is over and the SL Army again can pickup their duties as their taxi drivers.

The SL officers who dare raise their voice commenting about the GOSL leadership get fired, pensioned or given new posts. I guess most Sri Lankans, Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese, dream of the day Sri Lanka have a General similar to Pakistan president Perez Musharaf, who together with Colonel Karuna could solve the LTTE terrorism problem once and for all, liberating the Tamil people from the LTTE tyranny. Corrupt and incompetent politicians will never be able to resolve the LTTE problem.

Ranil W. should be charged for violating Article 157A of the Constitution and sent to a life imprisonment sentence for treason. Ranil should serve time together with S.B. Dissanyake, and then the rest of the UNP would be preoccupied to get their criminals out of prison.

I still have to say the same as when this story first appeared. This is my view :

During his regime Ranil made many ‘confidence building measures’ towards LTTE which did not work. His survival depended on the peace talks so he had to please the LTTE.  After all that friendly gestures we could not even get LTTE to talk on a permanent solution. I will give credit to Ranil for saving lives due to the CFA. But the CFA devised by Ranil’s think tank ( even with well paid expat advisors ) had too many loopholes. LTTE used the weak CFA to their advantage to build up military and political strength. Even LTTE admitted they were to break the CFA if not for Tsunami. Now European Community finally admitts appeasement of LTTE does not work. But Ranil is still trying to appease LTTE by making such statements so he can win the next election with LTTE approval.

Internal conflict of  UNP pushes Ranil towards political bankruptcy but making such statement to gain political mileage is not acceptable. It violated his own principles relating to the peace process. Undermining Mahinda peace talks is one thing but to strengthen LTTE hand to make their case stronger is another. Ranil has been there and done that so, why does he keep winding up and challenging PA, JVP and JHU on peace process?  Such childish behaviour is for sure unbecoming of a political figurehead. Strange given the fact that Ranils own independence day statement says “Therefore on this Independence Day let us shelve petty actions seeking political gain and pay our attention towards finding pragmatic solutions to the problems facing the country and nation.”

Mahinda’s survival depends on how he handle LTTE as well. It is obvious both Ranil and Mahinda have to be patient and flexible towards such an outfit but they must stick to their principles. I hope Mahinda will take-in lessons learned by previous talks. His National consensus  is good but why not get opposition in the peace delegation ? This issue of Karuna would be dealt with during the negotiations and not before that. That sure would be on LTTE agenda along side HSZ demands. LTTE will sit down due to US / Norway pressure, prospective EU /Canadian ban, maintain Tamil expat fundraising and finally IC opinion. Nothing is expected to come out of this round of  talks but at least it is a start. LTTEs behaviour is predictable but same can not be said of any southern politicians.

A exceptional article analysing this Karuna factor with the heading ‘The Tiger and the Paramilitaries’ has appeared in Asian Tribune website. Here is the link :

Post Just You Wait
Most guys responding on this forum are shooting at Ranil for giving-in too much to LTTE at the talks.

So they now fancy MR.

Just you wait for a while. MR would have given in more than these guys would like.

They would then want Somawansa to become the next President.

Then, for sure, the country would be divided into two!

dear phoenix
then who should b prisoned for engaged in anti peace campaign, anti norway campaign, then after winning election to change their vision, sacrificed 200lives of our brave soldiers, then adopted the ranils peace treaty as their vision without going for the war. it is jvp &jhu that sholud b prisoned. we indebted to ranil for saving 10,000 of our soldiers lives from 2002. please dont forget it is still ranils vision now jvp &jhu adopted. so dont just crtizise oppotion leader.it is no use. for more than 2 years he is powerless. so it is jvp in the power for 2 years. if they needed any change that last 2 years more than enough. without engaged in those bluffs we need give full support to mahinda for the peace with the support of unp.

I don't see any problem in JVP is trying to get to power in a time when LTTE is trying to get power. What is wrong with it?

LTTE boot lickers may blame JVP for everything including what they ate for breakfast, but turning a blind eye to LTTE's mass murders. That will only show how foolish are those "wise" advocates who don't give a damn about even the spelling of what they write (or probably unable to write in proper spelling), but yet pretend to be the most interlect and trying to serve some divisive ideology based on political prejudice.

JVP had couple of failed foolish attempts in 1971 and 1987, both were successfully crushed and now they are in a political agenda rather than on terrorist agenda. Let them do what ever they want to do within the democrativ framework, but make sure anti-democratic and anti-human LTTE is first identified as the true enemy and try to consolidate among all other parties to defeat the real enemy at least for now. It is not wise at this dangerous stage to have differences, I mean petty differences to de-rail the unity and strength against LTTE. I wonder why those pretending anti-LTTEyers forgot to mention how bad the LTTE destroyed the country not in just 2 occations but during a whole 20 years period! The cat always jump out of the sack to show the true picture of the writer!

LTTE boot lickers might appear as anti-LTTE, (just to divide and weaken the parties against LTTE at this critical stage) by writing lightly against LTTE thus pretending to be anti-LTTE, while engineering greater and subtle divisions among the rest, so in long-term LTTE can win.

Please be careful about those pretending anti-LTTEyers who might say "I will be the last one to support LTTE"!

ltte s boot licker is the jvp. they began to lick the boots of ltte in 1987 when ipkf was crushing the ltte. they feared the public wt indian invasion.they attacked our bravr army &police when they had a small rest from the war, kiled our brave soldiers, policemen & their families, chased the indian army out of SL strengthening the ltte, giving ltte new life. we could have end up in unitary provincial council if we supported 1987 indo lanka peace treaty.but today we have to give federal to the NE problem.they vhemently oppsed provincial councils. now they r sitting in provincial councils without any shame. how many provicial counciilers were gunned downed by the jvp mafia in 1987 for contesting the election? we will soon see them sitting in federal councils.
before the election they wanted to expel norway, abolish ranils peace treaty.but after gaining the power they practiced restrained while ltte killing our soldiers. becas of them 200 of our soldiers killed. now they r dining wt ltte, giving vip facilities to bala &taking the ranils peace treaty foward without shame. these ltte boot lickers r today going to swiss. jvp want to destroy our army beacas they hate our army as they crushed them in 1987. beware &protect of our army from them.

What can you expect from an opposition leader who was not there at Independence celebrations, without any reason.
What a childish behaviour.

This is a common trait among our politicians. No matter what the party, they behave like this if they are not in power.
