Sri Lanka seeks international expertise to prop up governmen
Shimali Senanayake in Colombo, Sat Jan 28 23:45:48 EST 2006
The government is planning to infuse international expertise to boost
its negotiating team, ahead of face-to-face talks with the Tamil Tiger
rebels next month, officials said. The inclusion will strengthen the
government delegation to be led by a government minister, officials
involved in the peace process said. A strong military contingent,
supported by legal experts are set to be apart of the delegation to
Geneva, they said, adding that this was necessary because the talks
were essentially on the implementation of the cease-fire and not on a
political solution.

LTTE does not have to kill people, extort money from people, kidnapping etc.,
LTTE should be tried under UN terrorist rules.

we don't need a international expert to negotiate simple a solotion
we need a commonsence people to achieve a common solution
why not - lock bala & ratnasri(pm) in a room for a month with starvation diet possibly you may find a solution-nothing wrong in trying- if we have a remote chance of success

I am sure already SUNGOAT lives on tablets. I we can keep him the way he is living within another few years something inside hum will blow and that will be the end for him.
Who ever sponsoring peace talks should pay for some classy looking women to stay in the same hotel. Women should be told the agenda first.
Unfortunately that will not work this time. Adele balasingham will be the guard.
Another news report says that Devaraj Fernandopulle will be the head of the team heading to Geneva. I think that is a good idea.
Samantha Perera suggested my name too. THANK YOU.

 OFF TOPIC
Most of the respondents seem to have gone astray. Off topic!
The subject here is that the SL Govt seeks international expertise for their negotiating team.
I think there are lot of guys who write regularly on LA who can be approached by the Govt.
To name a few:
Proximus, taraki, xyz123, kdk, janet, anuD, amerakoon, negombo, katunayake, and quite a few more.
The Govt will have a tough time choosing with such an abundance of talent to pick from!

I also suggest Srilanka give a role to Ananthasangaree, Hooles, Douglas, Siddharthan, Karuna, Dr. Narendran and others. Actually Sri Lanka should go a step further and cut off their possible potentially brilliant contributions to the future NE administration. Keep them in the south. LA contributors can pay for their services to Sri Lanka. I think Tissarani will love this suggestion. Sri Lanka will overtake Singapore in no time. I think Rajan Hoole left Singapore and Jaffna to make Sri Lanka a great nation and so did Jeevan Hoole who left Bushland and Jaffna to make Sri Lanka a greater nation.

this is a positive move by the govt. we need very good expert to get advice for power devolution.so we need a person who has broadly studied the power devolution around the world. prof GL peris has got very good knowledge of constitution &power devolution.we need him and other SL experts in the negotiation team. mr says maximum power devolution withing the unitary sytem. but this is not practical becas even in provincial councils there is maximum power devolution under unitary system. but we can learn from india. but jvp/jhu should support the mr s peace endevour. i hope they will not take poltical advantage from it.

Great Idea. But you can predict the results of the negotiations easily by reading the comments from all the forum members. It will be a stale mate.

I think that it would be inadvisable for the Sri Lankan Government to employ foreign experts to assist in its negotiations with the LTTE. The Government should not put itself in a position where sensitive data become available to foreign nationals. That might place the security of the country in jeopardy. As some of the contributors pointed out, there are many Sri Lankans in the country and abroad who have the expertize and intelligence to help and the Government should not be ashamed to secure their services.

if any foriegn country need any information regarding our security or what ltte & SL discuss in the peace table they can easily get it from ltte or otherwise they will bribe a any politician who is invoved in the negotiation. this is very simple thing. u know we have worlds best corrupted politicians.

Lack of cohesion in GOSL on discussion in Geneva
I have a feeling GOSL is trying to bring in another party so that they can blame any failure of talks on them. At present as pointed out by UNP, GOSL does not have a consensus on what to do in Geneva. JHU opposes it, JVP keeps quiet etc..
If talks are about implemetning the CFA then both sides will be intransigent. LTTE will say remove army camps from residential areas, disarm paramilitary and GOSL will say LTTE should not use sea routes to smuggles arms, killings etc.
What can the third party do other than changing the CFA??
