    NEW YORK, Jan. 25 (Kyodo) _ U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan applauded Wednesday the announcement that the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, also known as the Tamil Tigers, were to renew peace negotiations in mid-February in Geneva.

Talks between the two have stalled since April 2003.

In a released statement, Annan also welcomed the renewed efforts by the Norwegian government to facilitate the resumption of talks.

Government partner JVP always wanted Indian intervention in Sri Lanka. GL Pieris supposed to have had close dealings with the Americans.  Now Kofi is talking about UN.

Hope all the mixes will bring some reality for peace.

I think you spoke too soon. Hamas won the elections and I can see a lot of egg on a lot of faces. The US is supposed to promote democracy and the Palestinians have agreed and elected whom they wanted. Now what?? Wait for Mother nature to fix things again??

The involvement of the UN is not a panacea for our ills. The record of the UN is one of mixed success. In case you are not sure please check Yugoslavia- Specially what happened in Sebraniska, Haiti , Ruwanda etc etc.. Obviously there are some successes as in East Timor.

But I do agree with your comments about politicians. Sri Lanka has  the most selfish ,vile , ignorent  and plain vanila stupid people getting elected. Of the current crop there is not a single one with any broad based outward looking visionary type. Compare that to India.; The Finance Minister is a technocrat, The Prime Minster is a technocrat , The President is the father of Nuclear Technology of India., The defense sec is someone who came up the ranks , The Army chief is a minority Sikh.

Compare that to Sri Lanka. The President is a career politician who has not done a single  honest days work other than politics.The Prime Minister .. the lesss  said the better..Finance Minister .. again the same old President. The Defense sec.. nepotism at it's best.. own brother of the President.. The Army chief..thankfully he is at least qualified for the job!!
But he has only to look around for the bearded man Sandagiri the Chief of Staff!! ( In any country if there is a charge of this nature against someone he would have recused from his position until the investigation is over.. But not our Sandagiri.. he is smack there in the middle and how in the world would an "investigation" take place when access to documents, contracts etc are controlled by the man who is the accused!!

Are we a nation of imbeciles? Clearly the answer is no. Check any scientific/technical  publication and count the number of Sri Lankan names that jump at you. And what is the common denominator of all of them?? They are mostly from Sri Lankans who work in foreign establishments. For the last 5 years there have been only 2 papers in Nature the premire publication for basic sciences from research done in Sri Lanka by Sri Lankans!! This is from a nation that boasts of building Tanks, Buddhist Temples that rival the Pyramids etc etc...

Palestentians DID NOT vote for Hamas because they were pro terrorist!! They voted for Hamas because of the utter incompetence and CORRUPTION of the old FATAH leadership. Unlike the FATAH fat cats who were reeking with corruption Hamas was on the ground as both a political movement as well as a social movement. They are the ones who provided the services for the poor which the Palestinan authority failed to provide. They are the ones who set up schools, hospitals, child care centers for the poor. They are ones who took care of the widows,orphans and destitutes resulting from Israeli oppression.

Nonsense.. There is NO  Academic/intelligence record  that can even remotely connect the HAMAS with the LTTE or any other tamil militant group. [ Please provide evidence if you refute this] Some members of PLOTE as well as EROS were trained by George Habash's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in the Bekka valley of Lebanon. HAMAS was not even a factor at the time of the Lebanese Civil war when the Palestenians were arrayed with the Lebanese Muslims againstt the Phalangist ( Christians) of Lebanon. HAMAS though orignating from the Islamic Brotherhood had it's baptism in terrorism only in recent times and by that time the LTTE could teach the HAMAS. Not the other way around.

If MR hasn't ignored JVP/JHU and been adamant in having the talks in Sri Lanka or
in any Asian countries, of course,LTTE wouldn't have agreed. But one good thing
MR has done ever since came to power was completely ignore these stupids and
made up his mind to have the talk in Swiss ( European Country, contrary to comrades
demand). Norway or British didnt convince all mighty LTTE only the muted JVP.
