Post President wants to talk peace with Tamil rebels despite rece
Associated Press,  Mon Jan  9 08:04:34 EST 2006
Recent deadly attacks on Sri Lankan government forces allegedly carried out by Tamil Tiger rebels will not deter the president from trying to resume peace talks with the guerrillas, state-run media reported.

The administration of President Mahinda Rajapakse has said it is ready to meet with the rebels to ensure that the country's 2002 Norwegian-brokered cease-fire holds and that grievances of the ethnic minority Tamils are met.

``It is a great mistake if anyone believes that our decisions can be altered by means of terror,'' Rajapakse was quoted as saying by the state-run Daily News.

``Even today I would like to tell the people that we are still ready and committed to solve this problem in a peaceful manner by demonstrating our patience,'' he said.

On Saturday, a suspected Tamil Tiger rebel rammed an explosive-laden fishing boat into a navy vessel off northeastern Sri Lanka, killing 13 sailors in a suicide attack and raising fears that the country could slide back into civil war.

The latest attack brought the death toll in a recent wave of attacks on security forces to 58 since Dec. 4.

Authorities have blamed the attacks on the Tigers, saying the planning and execution of many the attacks clearly point to the troup, officially known as Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. However, the rebels have denied responsibility.

``The LTTE should realize that we are not deaf and blind,'' Rajapakse was quoted as saying. ``If someone takes my patience that I have inculcated through Buddhist values as my weakness, they would be mistaken.''

its time to talk
both sides know one or the other cannot win the war. rather than talking later talk now. it took the south
over 50 years to recognize there is a problem. so the tamils also should not wait for another 50 year to
realize the fact war is not the answer. south should start the productive fedarel talk now today. ignor the jvp the jhu. because tamils also wants to live in peace. but not at any cause. look around the whole world is moving forward. we are still fighting. in a few year we wont be speaking sinhala or tamil.
tamils will speak tamilish and sinhala will be speaking sinhalish and following western culture.

stop the war now

peace to nation of ceylon
english is the official language and christianity is the main stream religen

At this rate, we will lose about 700 soldiers this year!  The government has tried very hard to get help from India, USA and other co-chairs, but without any results.  Therefore, Sri Lankans everywhere must demand answers to the following:
1. How come such attacks (& killings) started only after Nov. 2005?
2. How come the international community (includes virtually all types of countries; superpowers, developed world, former communist, asian, non-aligned, least developed etc etc.) is not helping the SL Government?
3. What is the government doing about these incidents?  How many more will have to die before the people demand action from the elected government?

Rhetoric before the election of the President indicated that everything will be fine when he's elected.  Now what?

yes, the tamils live in SL r sinhala tamils, they r not indian tamils or thamilnadu tamils. they r sinhala tamils. they belonged to us, to mother srilanka, so we have to save them from killer vp who is trying to take them back to thamilnadu & we should share the power wt them. we have to mix wt them & get good values from us, & giving them our values to them.thatshow we can solve this problem. we shouldnt b afraid to give them econamics power as long as they support us to develop our mother lanka

Got a mansion to live, super luxurious cars, (futile ) foreign travels, first ladies frequent appearance in the state running Television, immediately after the election even MR son was selected as a president for some youth club, even the bank accounts would have been thicken (with Ambanthota fund it was not thick).
What else he need now.
Everything is fine (for him) as he said before the election.

Had there been no LTTE violence and election boycott, this president would not be in power. Almost 50% Sinhalese voted for JHU/JVP/MR, only because they wanted someone who would take a tough stand against LTTE. It was short sighted but as any third world country many people can be taken for an easy ride by making outlandish election promises. In a peaceful environment JVP/JHU or even Mahinda would have had no chance of coming to power because there will be nothing to scare the people with. The future of SL looks really bleak with this president. Only hope left now is if LTTE can be mature and flexible when coming to peace negotiations. Then again, LTTE is also run by fools like Balasingham, so I am afraid there is not much hope there either. Besides no one knows what’s in VP’s mind after so many ceasefire violations. Is he genuinely interested in finding a lasting peace through negotiations? It looks highly doubtful because if he did, why secretly setup an air-wing in the middle of a ceasefire. He should know very well, it will be considered a great threat to the security of SL.

You have a terrific name!

I thought that the Tamils in Sri Lanka call themsevles Eelam Tamils as distinct from Tamilnadu Tamils.
Are you trying to cleanse them ethnically by calling them some other name?

They are very bright and if you give them a chance they will help the Sinhala people and Sri Lanka with economic development.

But first your Govt must treat them equally, just like other Govts treat different races in their countries.

Just because their numbers are lower than Sinhalas they are not inferior. On the contrary they appear more clever than the Sinhalas.

Posting under duplicate accounts is strongly discouraged.

Do u think this will ever happen? These are power greedy politicians who did all the murders to cling on to the power to accumulate their wealth. I can remember Chandrika’s election pledges in the first term. Even she advertises the presidential house photographs in her election advertisements saying that good bye to the executive presidency. Did she ever bother to talk about it subsequently? Even though Tsunami victims didn’t get even a peanut from the government that lady got everything needed from the government and disappeared from the scene. By abolishing the English medium her father ruined the country. Whatever left was ruined by Chandrika. Just to hang on power went and formed alliance with the proven JVP jokers. Just think for your self what she did for the past 10 years to the country?
Every politician comes into power to fool the general public and make money. MR is not exceptional to this. At this point I think we can expect a valuable service only from RW.

dear baghawanji,
if we both want to go forward we have to defeat our racism. the name eelam has brought us lot of disaster. so we have to forget the eelam & find a solution as humans, 60% SL tamils live wt sinhaleses. we have to protect them as our own kind.division could put their future in great danger. i know lot of colombo tamils. i love them, they hate the word eelam, even up country tamils also hate the eelam. so we have to get this this solution under united SL.ranil wicramsinghe had good chance. but people who want to destroy motherlanka defeated him. best thing we can do is to get united send mr/jvp/jhu in to the jurrasic time wt the ltte & let them have this war there. not in my our mother country.  Racism & many divisions r destroying the world.
