The Sri Lankan army said it detected and defused an anti-personnel mine Friday, an hour before it might have been used to ambush a passing military convoy in the country's east, the Defense Ministry said.

Elsewhere, suspected Tamil rebels lobbed grenades at the army positions in the northeast, wounding at three soldiers in violence that threatens the country's 4-year-old cease-fire.

``It was a good find,'' said Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe, the military spokesman, of the Claymore mines found near the eastern town of Batticaloa before they were detonated. ``We alerted out troops and cleared the area,'' he said.

According to the army, the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are increasingly using Claymores - remotely detonated, aboveground anti-personnel mines designed to fire hundreds of steel balls.

In December alone, at least 23 sailors and soldiers were killed in two separate Claymore attacks by suspected rebels.

In separate attacks blamed on the rebels, three army units came under fire within a span of one hour in the port city of Trincomalee on Thursday night. Three soldiers were wounded, the Defense Ministry said.

There is a international campaign to ban anti-personal mines(http://www.icbl.org/lm), and all the countries are working together to get rid of the anti-personal mines. LTTE’s main weapon is this and all law loving Tamils in the world feed LTTE to use them.
So far in LTTE’s military campaigns, they haven’t show that they can co exist with the international law. In such a case still, countries like Norway does not think it is a good idea to ban LTTE activities in Norway. As long as some countries support terrorist because of the internal pressure, LTTE never stop their brutality.

SLA  is one of the famous militery in the world to find those things and tell public (stories). But the bad thing is they fell into such things often. Lets see this

Yes, you are correct. Talks will not be as easy as last time. LTTE will give much pressure this time in talks because they are ready for both (talk/war). That how you can press GOSL to move forward.
MR has stoped the GOSL deligate to north because the situation there is calm now. So, if you hit them only they will take re-action. There is no pro-action from south even now.

Tamilnet does not have any credibility now as it is unofficial website of LTTE. This does not show any article that LTTE is doing to Tamil.
As SRICANADA says we are fighting for our overdue rights. Not to coronate a terrorist group.

Tamil people united all over SL against GOSL (why not if you bring to them prision for nothing on a New Year Day - yes Colombo has all kind freedom to do that).
You do not want to read tamilnet, ok, thats your right. But check tomorrow all SL news papers will write the rally, which is shown in TVs already. How you guys can live in your own world and thinking the stars are comming towards to you only. You beg the world, to bring the LTTE to come to negotiation. When they are trying to come to table, you can't give any solution (how can they give in first place if they do not know what it is) drag it for 4-5 years and still you do not know where you are living. Again if LTTE want to go back to fight, cry again beg the world to ban etc. and show that you are still the only good boys in the world.
But you open your eyes, the whole world know that the real situation. If you can say that the LTTE are terroist, why are you waiting to ban them and hit them bak for more than 25 years. After the indipendance is there a unite voice from south? No, it will never happen. But tamile have most of the time.

But anybody who knows Wikramabahu Karunaratna, knows how much they were paid to do this rally in Colombo.

It seems you are trapped in your dream world. You have your freedom to do that in Sri Lanka.
It is easy to say that Tamils are united when all other Tamil voices are closed permanently. When Tamils started their arms struggle there were more than eight militant groups with the real intension of winning autonomy for Tamils. But LTTE annihilated all of them and now very few open their mouth against LTTE as they are not willing to die just for nothing.
Now LTTE and its followers say, ha Tamils are united. (Because, LTTE has killed all others. )
I think once very same thing  happened in south too. But likely it ended as Sinhalese are still lucky and protected by universe.

It's interesting to note that after all this "LTTE is powerful" talk and associated flag-waving, they have still not provided the "Eelam" dream to the suffering SL Tamilian.

So I am just asking .... how come such a powerful organization cannot give this little thing to it's people for last 25 years ??

The problem is SL is going nowhere these days. At least under president Kumaratunge we had lady luck. Now no luck.

Everything is getting worse. Why cannot Mahinda take good that previous leaders did forward. I think we had peaceful elections thanks to Independent Election, Police and Public commissions that we had. But now it is time to appoint new members. Well Mahinda has no intetions. He had ordered to transfer all those police officers who did unbias work during the election. He wants to activate the Election Machinary of his party. So he wants to win another election. He is not going to address LTTE issue.

Look at our cricket team. We have unqualified person as the sports minister and all the institutes under his preview are run by interm administrators in other words his cronies. Didn't we have a good time with sports that we produce world class athleats. Didn't we win the World cup. Even our world cup winning caption stated last week we have cronies running the cricket. Yes, we will have cronies everywhere under so called "Mahinda Chinthanaya".  Still they are fighting to appoint heads of different institutes. We have a bigger cabinet than anybody else. Anura is promoting tourism. He is yet to come to SL. He is fighting to represent MR at the Dubai leaders funeral with Fowzie (Transport minister).

Managala an artist is going from country to country asking SOS. But is he qualified for that. We know the level of education and credibility of people in Indian and US foreign ministers.

In another area, Erick Soheim wanted to meet Wimal Weerawansa who went around the country lambasting Norway face to face, Wimal is refusing. We should at least appreciate the guts of Mr. Erick.

People are already fed up of this governement. On top of that we know what happened last night at Light House Hotel, Mabole in Wattala. Ministers goons did not want to pay for what they consumed. Then the equipments that had given for them to protect the minister had been used against the owner of the hotel.

JHU leader wants LTTE to come to a debate on the Home Land theory. LTTE is running a small area of SL with their own people (700,000), Police, Banks, Army etc. Even they loose the debate what difference does it make. Can JHU retake LTTE area? Why not try at least that?

I am sure people of Sri Lanka are so fed up and they probably think everybody is same.

Look at the photos taken in Jaffna that show , even under tremendous threat from the terrorists to the soldiers, Tamils in Jaffna, inlcuding school children aren't intimidated by the soldiers.

Amry is doing a terrific job in Jaffna, and LTTE is finding it hard to create a wedge between the public and the army.
LTTE is on its way to self-destruction. The earlier that bunker-hiding terrorist bite his cyanide capsule or hit the dust some other way, better it would be for Tamils.

What do you get from the photos? Why the army is standing besides the the school childrens? to protect them?
I am clearly say that there is no guys in this forum who write against tamils, never lived in a war effected area. I am dead sure on that. If your childrens are going to the school and the army is on the street, people never like to walk on that way. Army is army in any world and if the war is there people never like them. If you try to answer this one, plese be on the area effected. Your liking and the reality is different.
