President Mahinda Rajapakse has urged a Catholic church leader in Britain to help prevent large-scale fund-raising for Tamil rebels in that country and in European countries.

The request was made when Cardinal McCormack Murphy O'Connor from Britain called on Rajapakse in Colombo where a wide range of talks including the current peace process were held.

Rajapakse explained the reality of the large amounts of funds being raised by the LTTE in Britain and other European countries, and requested the Cardinal to use his good offices and the influence of the Church to stop this.

He said the funds did not go to help the poor Tamils but to the LTTE to further strengthen it with sophisticated weapons. The cardinal assured Rajapakse that his concerns, particularly regarding the funds would be seriously addressed.

I don’t understand why Mr.Rajapakshe does block the supplies of military nature that flows to LTTE through Colombo. Many news articles raveled that most of the weaponries and instrumentation for LTTE’s terrorist work went through Colombo harbor.
LTTE does not collect finds with their name in any foreign country. Funds are collected for different charity organization.
But it is a good try to educate an accepted person in a country what is going on. But I doubt whether Cardinal will take any action against LTTE fund raising in UK.

Seems like Rajapakse is all over. We wants Europe to ban LTTE, he wants India to threaten LTTE, he wants UK Catholic church to stop funds to LTTE. He wants US to threaten LTTE.

Yet at the same time he wants to have peace talks with LTTE through Norway. He wants to meet Prabakaran.

Look like he is a man with the smile and have no control on SL.  Is LTTE banned in SL?

LTTE is not ban in SL as it block the peace talk. A government cannot have peace talk with the ban organization. LTTE had been banned in SL and was removed to facilitate the negotiation.
But international banning block the resources and support to the LTTE so there is a possibility of pushing LTTE toward the democratic steam. It is the nature of any militant group to negotiate when they are less supported, specially LTTE is very famous for this.

What about sending tsunami funds to those affected Tamils, Mr Rajapakse?

Unfortunately, he can't do that because the LTTE won;t let him. They want the money to come to them first.....

LTTE never gave what they collected from western countries to general people. But that’s how they are collecting money.
