Sarath Fonseka is an opposition leader in SL, whether we like him or not. No other opposition leaders are being detained at the moment. So he is Sri Lanka's detained opposition leader.

Get it?

By the way, while struggling with that minor point which is too big for your small mind, you have missed the main point in the story:

Quote:
Fonseka's office said in a statement Sunday that a court had permitted him to use phones brought by his wife.

But during her last visit Saturday, the army told her that the right to use phones had been withdrawn, the statement said. Fonseka has started fasting until he is given access to phones again, it said.

Military spokesman Maj. Gen. Prasad Samarasinghe said the right to use a phone was a concession allowed by army commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya, not by a court.

Opposition leader in Sri Lankan terms is usually the Leader of the opposition, presently is RW. He has tried hard to retain his position & he finally will. He will not like any other to pickpocket that from him.

Anyhow we Sri Lankans living here are to be provided with some tuition on the western democratic principles. Mr. Proxi been nominated by the Chancellor. When is it going to be sir?      Very Happy

Agree. Opposition Leader in ANY in country is THE Leader of the Opposition - I am sure this is the case in SL also - there can be only one official opposition and therefore only one Leader. Certainly SF does not hold that title since the UNP-headed coalition is the official opposition and RW IS the leader of that

Perhaps it was a typo.. but I thought in funny because it came hot on the heels of "former President of Sri Lanka RW" sometime last week I think.....

I think it shows how careless & casual the reporting is and the standards of some of the media personalities & publications.

Also it could be a deliberate twist, though we Sri Lankans know who has or had which title, those millions out there wont they go by the caption, “former president” or “opposition leader” not only attracts also makes it more damaging than to an individual name. That’s mischief reporting.

By the way did you get the time table for the classes from the chief?  Wink

You'd expect these representatives of the fabulous free foreign press (AP, AFP) upon whom many Western news organizations and sometimes administrations rely upon for information - to take some level of pride in their work..

Apparently not

Yeah, if this is deliberate, then the optics created are damaging - perhaps that was the intent all along. Contrary to popular belief, the fifth estate can be (and sometime IS) manipulated to suit the needs of the hour

That may be true of the Westminster system, where there is an office called the Leader of the Opposition. Sri Lanka doesn't have the Westminster system. Outside the Westminster system, any leader opposed to the ruling mob can be called an opposition leader. Fonseka is the man who directly opposed the President of SL most recently. That is why, the reporter called him Sri Lanka's detained opposition leader and did not use the term "The Leader of the Opposition".

You missed all that Master Proxy. You may have to repeat Reading & Comprehension. You failed last week's DBSJ test too.

Next question to the class:

Does "ANY country" include the USA and China?

Master Proximus, answer the question please. Master MAC, get back to your desk!

Why do  you reckon he wants that phone and no other ? Sheer pig-headedness or might it be one furnished by certain interested parties that perhaps cannot easily be compromised ?
Food for thought ....

In general what we know the phone calls can be monitored, but the technology is so advanced it may be possible to bypass such processes, mobile telecom experts might be able to explain this. Firstly the request was to speak with the children that was met as a special case and provided the facility, so why then his wife’s mobile, unless there is something to the effect that you are thinking of.

The second or another reason could be to keep the drama going. Politically for both SF and to the DNA (JVP) this drama is important. Hunger strike is a sensitive political weapon; fires will keep burning till it is over thro the media. In the rush if some thing to happen to the person who fast, falling sick, it could create a wave of sympathy, which they are looking for, in the absence of real mass support.

Well the latest is SLA gave permission for him to use wife’s phone and the fast has ended. This is not going to be the end of the drama, tomorrow will be another, which they are compelled to create to keep the heat on one side and to distract from the other issues related to the actual case.
