This is bad; no matter what, there HAS to be prima facie evidence before arresting people of such high stature. I am beginning to wonder if there is some truth in the allegations against the government about electoral dishonesty. That is not to say the General is a nice guy who behaved ethically, but this smells like a dictatorship that is panicking. Has it got to do with how SF is said to have made deals with the JVP while he was in uniform as CDS? Has it got to do with India warning MR's regime about how SF went to see JVP leaders while in uniform to negotiate his political campaign and giving proof?
It is a sad day for democracy if these are fake charges and the work of vindictive people who fell out after the war was over. I am really saddened by this news. He needs legal representation and a fair hearing. Will he get that? I doubt it.

Nothing to be surprised and this was predicted a while back. MR is playing the same book that JR played after his reelection in 1982. Arrest the leading lights of the opposition. accuse them of Sedition..( As in accusing Vijaya Kumaratunge , Vasudeva etal for having “Naxalite” intentions ) demoralize the opposition.. and get a thumping majority in the upcoming elections.. Perpetuate the Chinthaney for posterity and release the opposition types AFTER the election..
Fonseka’s threats on testifying against the brothers for war crimes was probably what broke the donkey’s ..I mean camels back..
A man who fought for the country fr 40 years is arrested for offenses committed while "in Army service" and another man who horrendoulsy murdered 600 cops while "in LTTE service" is a Vice President of the SLFP.
Then again people in SL voted for these guys overwhelmingly.. so guess they have to live with this carnival..

( Is this a one-man cabinet ?
Just one guy working in the govt/country ? )
Come on MR ! Shed more light or shed the paranoia !
These actions will only cause unwanted aggravation
on part of the victims
and sympathy towards them.

I can't agree with you more Roger! This is stupidity and if the Govt doesn't have substantial grounds for this they are going to pay back dearly

Stupid and unnecessary.
I suspect they will bring up some kind of HR violations charges against him as well. Tongue-in-cheek, make SF the convenient sacrificial goat for the IC HR Lobby

Just two days ago Gotabaya said, Fonseka is dreaming and he will not be arrested. Fonseka predicted this will happen and he was correct. Now the country is more divided Tamils and Sinhalese and Sinhalese and Sinhalese. Now, DR.Rajapakse can relax and wait for the next landslide victory in the parliamentary elections. Sad day for Sri Lanka!!!

HOW TRUE HOW TRUE; this reeks of JRJ and his attempts to destroy popular figures. Where are the facts? Obviously SF and current SLA Commander are at loggerheads because SF tried to destroy the current commander before he was appointed on petty false charges too. So there is no love lost. during the campaign we saw a lot of those stories coming out as people whose careers were destroyed by SF came out to support MR on TV day in and day out. You should have seen it all.
But Sri Lanka will pay dearly for this folly if this is a false arrest reeking of Hitlerian adventures of trumped up charges. It could be that the threat to spill the beans (SF was complict in) at HR courts is what prompted this panicky move. I am shocked and stunned. But what if SF was the man who got Lasantha W killed? Or did they all work together?

General Colin Powel was the Chief of the Defence Staff of USA during the Gulf War.
I wonder what would have happened to him, had he acted in the same disgraceful manner general(rtd) Sarath Fonseka behaved lately?
General Powel knew the difference between the state secrets and news for the public consumption.

The question is how ethical SF is? Should a govt stand silently when this man constantly threatening the national security by publicly talking non-sense? This is where people like Collin Powell should be respected, he could've said lot of things against Bush admin, but he chose to disagree and retire with his respect. Because there are certain ethics you just don't break no matter how wrong the situation could be, for the good of greater cause, it is simply better to be quiet. Obviously SF does not have the required dignity to do so.

I have very little respect for SF. Regardless of his politics and his personal vengeance he should not have divulge anything that was discussed at the “SECURITY COUNCIL” in public. I am sure ordering to kill LTTE surrenders was a top secret of the government and it was not right to expose Gota and Shavendra on that issue. If something like that happened in America entire America would have protested.
Apparently, SF has written an affidavit with more state secrets and he is bragging that he is ready to expose those to the world.

RM:
Perhaps you don’t know about the Sri Lankan political types. They are far worse than the ones you find in India. These are ALL thugs and murderers garbed in white clothing who attend Temples in the day time and order kidnappings and murders in the Night. Most honest people cannot afford to be in politics in SL since the qualifications for such jobs are the ability to lie, cheat, rob, pillage and plunder.
Trust me.. If Fonseka won the election the treatment of MR/Gota et al would have been the same.
On a positive note our MR has been given a Doctorate.. Now we can all call him Dr.Mr.His Excellency President.
