COLOMBO — At least four explosions were heard in Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil heartland of Jaffna ahead of Tuesday's crucial presidential vote, an independent election monitor told AFP.

One of my friends who just visited Jaffna said that Jaffna is overwhelmingly SF especially the youth. They are suppose to be more enthusiastic than even in the south. Not sure why since SF played a big part in the destruction of the LTTE. My feeling is that they think by supporting someone like him without a political base would make the tamil voters his reliable base and he will in return protect them even if he does not give into any his demands. This is just my theory.
The only person gaining from any chaos in Jaffna is the person most likely to lose that district which is MR. These type of explosions and a few army check points here and there will keep the voters at home. Around 700,000 voters in Jaffna but only half of that will vote because the rest no longer live in Jaffna or dead. I think if there is one factor that will determine this election is voter turnout in NE. Voter turnout can easily overshadow any rigging. 75% turnout in NE and the king is toast. Who they will vote is easy to predict.
