Post Et tu Brute?
Nalin Swaris, Jan 21

Even you Brutus? Most famous last words in history, due to its inclusion in William Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Julius Caesar’. Before turning to Shakespeare, a few historical facts about Gaius Julius Caesar (100 BCE- 44 BCE). Julius’ surname became the title of emperors after him. Julius undoubtedly was Rome’s greatest General – a military genius and ambitious politician. In 44 BCE, because of his brilliant victories in war and his great political influence, Caesar became Consul for a fifth time, with Mark Antony as his devoted supporter, Caesar got himself declared ‘dictator for life’.

I agree with everything Nalin said about the General and his new buddies.  I would also add that it was Mahinda and Gotabhaya, not the Ranil Brigade/JVP/TNA, who made the General the General and gave him the opportunity to defeat the LTTE.

What Nalin neglected to answer is how the General, who has tied up with the Who's Who of Sri Lankan political losers of the past 20 years, has a very good shot of defeating the incumbent President who presided over the end of the LTTE and the 30-year war.  Mahinda should have had no problem winning this election given that the average person with a brain understands that Mahinda played THE key role (among others) of winning the war (as Sampanthan himself acknowledged!).

Mahinda may lose the election because of the "Mervyn Factor" (shorthand for widespread failures in governance and accountability) and he only has himself to blame for that.  Why couldn't Nalin acknowledge this?

It was only yesterday that RogerThis told us that MR has hit the panic button. Today, Nalin shows us that MR's supporters have hit the panic button too.

Why would a Mahinda-lover select such an inappropriate analogy? Equating MR to Ceasar - that too in an account of Ceasar's last days?

Nalin is definitely showing signs of panic.

By the way, Rome was at the top of the world during Ceasar's time. Et Sri Lanka?

The chapter ended with the end of Ceasar's rule. Et Mahinda's?

If we have a Ceasar and a Brutus, we must have a Marcus Antonio too. He was the orator. Does Nalin think is is Marcus?

Picking the right analogy shows the class of a writer!

Post Judas & Jesus
I saw in one of Swarnavahini TV discussion Dr Mervin compared Fonseka as Judas and indirectly implying that Mahinda is like Jesus.

There is not much difference from Dr Mervin's comparison than that of Nalin Swaris.
If Mervin have not used thuggery to silence the Mangala loyalists in Rupavahini, today Rupavahini won't be singing in praise of Mahinda.
I think it is very unreasonable to bash Dr Mervin for all bad deeds of present government, he deserves better recognition.
